Educational spoilsports in Travancore

Educational Secretary Mr. P. Ayyappan Pillai, who has no considerable knowledge of Malayalam language, has followed an autocratic style in the matter of selecting and fixing the Malayalam textbooks for use in the schools under him in Travancore. It contained vulgar, frivolous materials and distorted language usages, and these texts were corrupting children's morals and language. This was pointed out in one of our previous articles. Like a blind man accepting pieces of glass crystals, offered by a cunning jeweller, believing them to be valuable gems, the work of an educationist who selects books for schools based only on tactile quality is not considered anything but contemptible. Many newspapers have been clamouring for a long time that Mr. Ayyappan Pillai is harming the minds of the children of this state and causing financial losses to their parents every year because of his ignorance of the mother tongue. We are not surprised, though a little saddened, that he himself is not ashamed of what is evident in this day and age by accepting the trash produced as good books, like offerings to the goddess Saraswathi, by those writers who are sycophants and corrupt usurers. Among the prose textbooks selected for this year, the three that came under his review used for the lower classes, needless to say, are pieces of translation from English that have been churned out without much thought.

There was a time when Malayalam texts prescribed in the University of Madras included texts of prose and poetry like "Aladdin and the magic lamp", "Voyages of Sindbad" and "Ajnanakathaaram" (*Ignorant dagger) etc., which were substandard. When the demand for those kinds of books, chosen by those who had no knowledge of Malayalam language, started to wane a little, that very same curse has fallen on Travancore during the period of Mr. Ayyappan Pillai. Kerala Varma Valiyakoil Thampuran is known as the father of modern Malayalam prose literature. The Travancore government has published good prose books like "Vijnanmanjari" (*Bouquet of knowledge), "Sanmarggapradeepam" (*Leading light), "Lokathinte saisavaavastha” (*The Infancy of the World) etc. by him while he was the chairman of the Textbook Committee. Even though these were included in the syllabus for several years, it is surprising that the Malayalees, during Mr. Ayyappan Pillai's time, forgot these standard prose books and instead wanted to learn the language through the Eurasians and those who did not really know the Malayalam language. We doubt if Mr. Ayyappan Pillai himself has understood anything about the books "Devadattan", "Kalanjukittiya Thangam" (*The lost and found gold) and "Netajipalkar" which have been selected for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd classes this year. Although Mr. Hessing, who wrote “Devadattan”, can be proud of being a B. A. L. T., it seems that it was Mr. Ayyappan Pillai, who projected him as a writer. The story of this book is nothing but a summary of a poetic lesson in English. We suspect that there is some defect in the intellect of an educationist who accepts such summaries as a text-book, fit only to be included in the set of exercises that the school children write during their holidays.

The famous novelist George Eliot deserves the first place among the philosophical collections of prose poems. It is seen that "The lost and found gold" is a warped Malayalam adaptation of "Silas Marner," which has achieved immortal fame among English novels. While it is impossible to translate George Eliot's novel into Malayalam without spoiling its meaning, charm, grandeur, and beauty, making this type of mischief in Malayalam and causing people to suffer is tantamount to harming the original author's reputation. Mr. C. R. Krishna Pillai's “The lost and found gold” has turned out to be a blemish on Silas Marner. For those who have read the original book “Silas Marner”, the protagonist appears to possess the common human greed and the book deals with God's ways covering various life philosophies. There are no two sides to the fact that it looks like a mere piece of metal that has become completely tarnished, like a grain of rice removed from the husk or a body of flesh without a soul. The philosophy of life that gave life to the original book has been lost in this translation. By removing the divinely gifted visceral organs, flesh, and blood, a taxidermist preserves an animal to show them as examples of God’s creations. It goes without saying that the difference between the live animals and the ones kept in the museum is reflected in the original and this translation. The flaws in the prose and the selection of words are very special.

It is hard to believe that this was written by Mr. C. R. Krishna Pillai. While criticising the book “The lost and found gold,” the writer of this essay further ventures to expose the inaccuracies and shortcomings in the use of Malayalam. He points out the non-adherence to the grammar, syntax, inflexions etc. peculiar to the language. He is also surprised to see more or less the same shortcomings in "Netajipalkar," written by the same writer.

Considering these errors, we think that these books may have been translated under some duress and in haste. However, we are not aware of any law requiring such clumsy and distorted translations to be compulsorily accepted as text-books in schools. We have to say that these book writers, who are teachers themselves, have thus been influenced to accept these warped translations as textbooks to revolutionise the intellect of the students but not able to keep up the pure purpose of pedagogy.

The secretary is so ill that he is unable to read the book or see the mistakes just by looking at it. We think that he has done a disservice to the government and the citizens to whom he owes his salary by accepting such shoddy translations.

Alas, these shoddy books, which cost only an anna or two to produce, are priced at five, six and even twelve annas and then sold to the students at eight annas, 10 annas or one rupee.

Will this curse surrounding the education department of this country ever go away?

Translator’s note:

*While the first two are well known books in English, the last one “Ajnanakathaarm” (Ignorant dagger) is a Malayalam lyrical composition by Joseph Fenn written in the 19th century. Cherusseril Chaathu Nair who was proficient in Sanskrit and English had embraced Christianity and took the name Joseph Fenn. (Ref. S. Parameswara Aiyer, Ulloor, Kerala Sahithya Charithram, Vol. III, pp 665).

*The titles of textbooks are translated into English for added clarity.
