Our unemployed youth - 1

On the occasion of the twelfth annual conference of Travancore Vidyabhivardini Mahasabha (Progressive Educational Society), among the subjects that were spoken about, one that was elaborated upon with great deliberation was that of those who are idle among the Nair community. The first part of the speech by K. Parameswaran Pillai B. A. B. L. on this topic was published in the last issue of the newspaper and is concluded in this issue. It has become necessary to make some criticism about its main arguments since we think that anyone who is interested in the progress of the Nair community should consider this speech seriously. The unemployed, who have been the subject of Mr. Parameswaran Pillai's speech, are unlike the increasing number of unemployed people in the Western countries. The unemployed in those countries, although they have the physical strength and the will to work, are suffering because they cannot find enough work. Lakhs of people in those countries have to wander without work as a result of the industrial systems of capitalists, who are eager to make money mainly by resorting to the help of machines to appropriate all the resources of nature. Not only has there been such a plight in our country ever, but the number of jobs here have not increased enough to exploit nature as much. There are many jobs that the unemployed can do in this country. And these unemployed people have physical strength too. They do not suffer from lack of food like the unemployed in the West. But the main difference between them and the West is that our unemployed either do not have the inclination to work or deliberately avoid work. Since this evil has not affected all the communities of this land, it can be assumed that there are some special reasons affecting such unemployed classes.

Mr. Parameswaran Pillai regrets that the number of unemployed people has increased, not only among the Nairs, but in many of the communities that follow the Marumakkathayam system of life. He reckons that no less than 25,000 youngsters from the Tharavads* in this country are among the people wasting their lives with their idleness. They have the physical strength, intelligence, common sense, and moreover, enough work to do. However, they do not work but live on free food doled out by the family and live without making any contribution in return to the family. Not only they do no good, but more often than not, they cause much harm. Quarrels between members of the family, disputes between the Karanavars and the younger ones, in some cases, stabbings, murders, and other acts of violence, which are now quite common, can be attributed to these unemployed people.

It is not calculated what the financial income would have been for the family if they were encouraged to or made to take up work on a daily basis. According to Mr. Parameswaran Pillai's estimate, at least 25,000 people are unemployed. It cannot be denied that each of them needs at least five rupees for food and one rupee for other expenses on an average in a month. That means, 25000 x 6 x 12, i.e., Rupees 18 lakhs is spent on them in a year from their ancestral homes without any valuable return. It is no wonder that the Nair community has declined financially when there is this loss going around the year. If all these 25000 people were given the proper facility and it is made compulsory that they do their daily work through self-effort, it will not only enable them to fend for themselves but also save the Nair clan Rs.18 lakhs a year. Additionally, they will be able to save some part of the earnings. On an average, one can expect to get paid at least ten rupees every month. If he spends six rupees for his daily needs, he can still earn four rupees a month. This means, 25000 people together can earn a total of Rupees 12 lakhs in a year. Because of this, there is a possibility for the Nair community to increase its wealth by Rupees 30 lakhs* every year. For this, it is necessary to think about the obstacles they face and take measures to solve them.
