The Travancore Monarchy (Four)

The first among them is Charavana. This person is known by some other names as well. Names such as Chami, Anantharamayyan also point to this man. Having grown weary and tired of committing misdeeds, this person lives somewhere at the palace in close proximity to the King. The other person, either out of fear of the British government or for protecting his dubiously earned wealth, is staying in a palatial building at some distance. Nonetheless, in order to meet his personal needs, he makes trips across town all day. His trips are conducted in such a way that upon watching them people might think that the royal palace itself, in all its splendour, is breaking loose from its position and going on a trip to Vadassery ten to fifteen times every day. These people spend much of their time each day, except for a short interval, at the royal palace with the intention of deflecting the King’s mind that is otherwise intent on doing virtuous deeds.

These servants, who are always alert about diverting the King’s mind, have already been employed to occupy two plush posts with a monthly pay of Rs 600/- and Rs 300/- each respectively. The first among them is a pukka illiterate and the second one is near literate. The deeds of these people are most abominable. Their families do not have any social standing. Not even a single attribute that would define other humans is applicable to these men. It is two people like them who are appointed by the great King as his advisers to guide him in matters related to the administration of the state as well as the affairs of the royal family. In the administration of the Travancore monarchy, the King’s decisions and opinions depend on the ulterior motives and intrigues of these mischievous servants.

We do not argue that the King does not have his own opinions. It is possible that in his 22 years of governance, he must have acquired the skill and the ability to outwit any skilful state administrator or strategist. The King must have become susceptible to influences under the guise of humility, generosity, sound policy, charity and punctuality befitting the Travancore monarchy. The Europeans and their lords, who are privy to this, respect and honour him fully. They have scant regard for the fame these mean servants have managed to gain by attaching their names to that of the King with the ulterior motive of serving self-interests and the evil intention of harming others. However, the people at large grieve over the King’s inability to ward off these pests who take advantage of the proximity they have with him despite the King himself having gained considerable determination, thanks to his long rule. That a King like him who has acquired western education, scientific knowledge, refined behaviour and experiences of the world should lead a life in subservience to the whims of some ignorant servants is inexplicable except in terms of the pulls of fate. How else can one explain this? And no one understands why the British rule , which is seized of the deplorable situation the King is in, does not make any effort to save him and his reputation from these evil servants. It is but the misfortune of the people and the royal family that the King is bereft of the fortitude to resolve the hardships caused by these servants. Just because the British government, which receives Rs 8 lakh as tax every year from the Travancore government, and its representative -- the Resident – remain silent, it does not mean that they are discharging their duties.

The King belongs to the refined class of people. He must have acquired knowledge and exemplary behaviour expected of a person of his standing. The subjects of Travancore are in the know on the subject but they are not fortunate enough to enjoy its fruits, thanks to the British government remaining overwhelmingly unsympathetic. To whom shall the subjects complain at this stage? Although newspapers have been vociferous about it for long, their voices do not reach the ears of the British government. The subjects have no way available to them to complain about the tormenting servants other than calling on God! We are not done yet, though. We temporarily take leave of you, readers, by announcing our determination to continue to make every effort until the great King and the country are freed from the torment of these servants.
