Travancore: Then and Now

There is no doubt that to the foreigners of today, who are distressed over the Brahmin aristocracy of Travancore, the opinions expressed by Bishop G. T. Gipson in some of the articles he wrote when he visited this country sixty-six years ago will be of interest. The aforementioned bishop was quite curious about the princely states, their kings and the state of affairs there, and made personal visits to those kingdoms. When he reached Thiruvananthapuram after visiting the palaces in the provinces of Mysore and Tanjore, the scenes he witnessed made him both happy and angry at once. The beauty of the mountain ranges of Travancore enthralled him. But he was aggrieved over the degeneration brought about by the Brahmins, not only among the people of the land but also in the state capital itself. He observed that Thiruvananthapuram city is so full of Brahmins that the very sight is abominable. It was as ... (text missing) that the Brahmins whom the English man saw overcrowding the streets then appeared to him. But the aversion that he felt towards the kingdom was so little! His description of the kingdom in the article stresses the hardships faced by the kings of this land, thanks to the doings of the Brahmins.

It was when His Majesty King Marthanda Varma, the predecessor of the present ruler, His Highness King Ayilyam Thirunal, was a prince that the bishop made his royal visit. The Englishman provided his account of the then king and the scenes that he witnessed at the palace thus: “I met His Majesty the King, today. It was my beloved host, the British Resident, Colonel Cullen who took me before His Majesty the King. The king of this enchantingly beautiful land is 26 years old. He looks gentle and comely. His amazing demeanour, befitting royalty, is quite pleasing and capable of attracting anyone. He speaks the English language quite fluently. Further, he has mastered Persian and Arabic languages as well. He is sufficiently knowledgeable about many subjects as he has had more exposure to quality higher education than is ordinarily provided to princes of the countries of the east. But, in truth, if he had shooed away the clutch of Brahmins hanging around him all the time, others would have known how refined a ruler he was. But this is near impossible. Since these crafty priests have caught him in their net by subterfuge, it has become quite impossible for him to even move his arms and legs without their permission. They have subdued his mind beyond measure. Exerting such overpowering influence on him became possible simply through the clever use of blind and foolish beliefs. The king has become a puppet, a plaything, the strings of which are pulled by the Brahmins at their will. It is a matter of concern for us all. Indeed, he wishes to do a lot of good things for his country and, no doubt, he is capable of doing them. But as of now, they are lying undone .”

And this is how the bishop, who is very worried about the Brahmin aristocracy, concludes his article: “If these so-called Brahmins were not there, Thiruvananthapuram would have become a small centre of culture and refinement. And south India would have gained much on account of that.” How sincere is the bishop in expressing his wish? We leave this question to the readers to think over.

Although it is almost more than seven decades since the onset of this affliction, Thiruvananthapuram has not been able to free itself of it yet. Not only that, even western education, as a civilising force, has not been able to weaken the regressive Brahmin aristocracy of Travancore. As Travancore has been under the alien Brahmin rule for a long time, this aristocracy has grown from strength to strength, entrenching myriad regressive practices and customs rooted in blind beliefs. The Brahmins have also deftly used certain tactics to enhance their power of influence over the kings. They stand ready and prepared to strengthen blind opinions that the kings are part of God’s divinity and that it is unbecoming of them to come into contact with their subjects other than Brahmins. Among other things, they perpetuate the idea that no one other than Brahmins should be employed as their servants. Such Brahmins alone are employed to teach the children of the palace. It is only after the minds of the royal members of the palace became corrupted with blind beliefs and extreme opinions that they started to mingle with people belonging to other castes who have acquired liberal education ! Travancore is a strange and wonderful country, indeed!
